The Healing Powers of Productivity
Lately I've been thinking about how healing productivity can be.
I saw a tik tok with a woman who said, "let's see how long it takes me to clean out this pantry I've been procrastinating on." She filmed the process (sped up of course), and it took her under an hour. But she had been thinking about it for months. And we're all guilty of that, aren't we?! Letting something take up so much of our precious head space and energy, when it would likely be easier to just tackle it. But we don't. Why? Sometimes we make things bigger in our head than they really are or need to be. Sometimes we let it take up space in our minds vs. thinking about things that are even worst, that we're also trying to avoid. Whatever the reason, it's easy to get sucked into this rabbit hole. But lately I've been leaning into using productivity as a way of healing the things that are bothering me (and freeing up my head). Here's what I've taken away from it.
Being productive is really about accomplishing the things you know you need to in order to get where you want to go. It's also something you have control over, which makes many of us feel good.
Being productive narrows your focus to the things right in front of your, so it really puts you in the present. Tired of hearing about the crumbling of democracy? Go clean your closet lol.
Being productive allows you to escape from the noise in your head, into action. If you're like me and prone to living in your head a lot, it can feel like a huge relief to move into action vs. thinking.
Being productive allows you to change a negative narrative that you're a procrastinator, if that's a story you've had about yourself.
Being productive frees you up for more enjoyable opportunities that may come your way, which you wouldn't be available for if you think you have to get through your to do list.
Being productive often allows for built in rewards, such as listening to a new podcast or audio book while you work for example.
Being productive applies the notion of "a body in motion stays in motion." Once you get the ball rolling, you'll be motivated to keep doing. Remember that the starting point isn't motivation. But rather, the motivation usually comes once you're in a rhythm.
Being productive leaves you with a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment.
Being productive shows you how much you're capable of, and increases your self trust. You've got what it takes to make sh*t happen.
Being productive shows you that most of what you're dreading isn't actually as big a deal as you've made it out to be.
Being productive frees up your head, and your spirit along with it.
We're in a weekend full of crap weather, so it's the perfect opportunity to test out the healing powers of productivity ;) Then reward yourself after, because that's totally part of the cycle. And just think of all the future time we've freed up for ourselves for when the weather is nice!!!
